While most of his countrymen have fled Syria, Mohammad Alaa Aljaleel decided to stay put in order to care for a colony of stray cats who depend on him

An electrician by trade, Aljaleel and his family had the opportunity to escape to Turkey from his civil war-torn country. But he could not abandon the 150 feline friends who depend on him for their daily care.

The cats were left behind by other Syrians who fled the country in the wake of the civil war that has been raging since 2011.

“I regard animals and humans in the same light,” he says. “All of them suffer pain, and all of them deserve compassion.”

Although he is risking his life, he feels that he has an important mission, because there are very few resources for animals in Syria. He hopes to someday open an animal hospital and shelter in his homeland, which currently lacks decent veterinarians, and doesn’t have any pet rescue organizations.

May Allah bless this good and kind man.
